Marine life highlights
Full marine life guideResident species: 1,200 fish species recorded in the Red Sea overall, around 800 of those visit reefs near Hurghada. Common encounters include parrotfish, butterflyfish, lionfish, moray eels, hawksbill turtles, and bottlenose dolphins (the resident pod lives at Shaab El Erg / Dolphin House). Whale sharks are rare but appear at Abu Galawa (south Hurghada) between July and September. Manta rays are seen offshore at Erg Somaya in winter.
Standout reefs
- 1Orange Bay (Giftun Island)
White-sand sandbar, two reef stops, the most photographed snorkel spot in the country.
- 2Mahmya Beach (Giftun)
Quieter than Orange Bay, restaurant on the beach, calmer water.
- 3Shaab El Erg / Dolphin House
Horseshoe lagoon home to a resident pod of around 250 bottlenose dolphins.
- 4Hula Hula Sandbar
Tide-only sandbar 33 nautical miles north, only appears between 11:00 and 14:00.

Hurghada International Airport (HRG) sits 5 km south of the marina. Most resort hotels are a 10 to 25 minute drive from the marina, our pickup driver will collect you between 07:00 and 08:00 depending on the trip. From Cairo, the drive is 6 hours, the bus is 8.
Featured trips

Marsa Alam
Snorkel with dugongs at Abu Dabbab, swim with dolphin pods at Samadai and Sataya, Marsa Alam is the wild side of the Red Sea.
Best for
Wildlife seekers, quiet-coast lovers, couples
Vibe
Wilder, quieter, more remote feel. The south of Egypt's Red Sea.
Signature stop
Dugongs at Abu Dabbab + spinner dolphins at Sataya
Best snorkel window
April to October
Why pick this base
The only easy place in the world to snorkel with dugongs. Spinner dolphins in protected lagoons. Green turtles year-round. Smaller crowds, smaller airport, bigger wildlife days.
Marine life highlights
Full marine life guideThe southern Red Sea is wilder. Resident populations include dugongs (the world's most accessible feeding ground), green turtles year-round, large schools of barracuda, and three protected dolphin pods (Shaab Marsa Alam, Samadai, Sataya). Oceanic whitetips, hammerheads, and the rare manta ray pass through Elphinstone in winter. The reefs see fewer visitors than Hurghada, so the fish are less skittish, you can drift past a parrotfish from a metre away without it reacting.
Standout reefs
- 1Abu Dabbab Bay
Seagrass meadow with resident dugongs and 8+ green turtles, shore entry, family-friendly.
- 2Marsa Mubarak
Sheltered bay with daily turtle sightings and occasional dugong, calm shallow water.
- 3Samadai (Dolphin House)
Protected horseshoe lagoon, resident pod of 60–80 spinner dolphins, 100-guest daily quota.
- 4Sataya Dolphin Reef
Fury Shoals reef, 100+ dolphins on a good morning, the largest pod in Egyptian waters.
Closest airport
Marsa Alam International Airport (RMF) sits 60 km north of Marsa Alam town. Most resorts are spread along a 30 km coastal strip between the airport and Port Ghalib. Pickup is included on every trip and takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the resort.
