A horseshoe-shaped lagoon, home to the most famous spinner dolphins in the Red Sea.
About this trip
Samadai is a protected dolphin reserve off the Marsa Alam coast. Daily access is strictly capped (around 100 guests in the water at one time, only during the morning window) so the resident spinner pod has its rest hours undisturbed. The captain decides the spot inside the reserve based on where the pod is on the day, we do not publish a fixed location. Wild dolphin sightings are never guaranteed.
Why the dolphins are in the lagoon at all
Spinner dolphins feed at night. They hunt in open water off the shelf, chasing small fish and squid that rise toward the surface after dark, and by sunrise they are full and tired. What they need then is shallow, sheltered water where nothing large can approach unseen, and Samadai's horseshoe reef is one of very few places on this coast that provides it. That is why the same pod of roughly 60 to 80 animals keeps coming back rather than wandering the coastline. Resting is not sleeping the way we do it. A dolphin shuts down one half of its brain at a time, so the pod keeps moving in slow, wide circles near the surface while it recovers. Interrupt that and the animal loses rest it needs for the next night of hunting. Every rule described below exists because of that single fact, and it is worth knowing before you get in the water: you are visiting a bedroom, not an aquarium.
How the reserve is run, and why it is worth the paperwork
Samadai has been a managed reserve since 2004, after years of unregulated boat traffic pushed the pod close to abandoning it. The lagoon is now split into zones: a core the boats and swimmers never enter, a marked area where snorkeling is allowed, and a mooring area further out where the boats tie up. Only 100 snorkelers are in the water at once, inside a window that runs from 10:00 to 12:30. Places are booked roughly a week ahead, so this is not a trip you can add to your plans the evening before. You are given a wristband on the boat and the rangers check it at the buoy line before anyone swims. Fins are not allowed inside the zone, because they stir up the seagrass and add noise, so you snorkel with a mask and a vest only. It is a lot of rules for a swim. It is also the reason there are still dolphins here to swim near, when several other Red Sea rest lagoons have quietly emptied out.
What the day actually looks like
Pickup is early, around 06:30, because the boat has to be at the lagoon before the window opens. The drive to the harbour depends on where you are staying along the Marsa Alam strip, then the crossing out to the reef takes about ninety minutes. You arrive before the window and the captain moors in the permitted area. The pod is usually already inside, circling slowly, and from the boat you can often see them before you get in. Entry is from the buoy line, in small groups, and the guide sets the direction so nobody swims across the pod's path. You float and let them come past. Nobody chases, and anyone who tries is brought back on board. After the window closes the boat moves to the outer reef for one or two ordinary snorkel stops, which is where the coral is actually best, then lunch on board on the way back. You are back at your hotel late afternoon, having spent about nine hours out.
Who this suits, and who should book something else
It suits anyone comfortable floating in open water without touching the bottom, who can accept that the animals decide how close they come. Around 95 percent of trips see dolphins, which is high, but it is not all of them, and the pod may stay at a distance on any given morning. It suits you badly if you want a guaranteed encounter, if you are not confident in deep water, or if a 06:30 start ruins your holiday. It is also the wrong trip if you mainly want coral: the reef here is good, but Ras Mohamed and Tiran are better if scenery rather than dolphins is the point. If you want dolphins and have a whole day to spare, Sataya has a bigger pod. If you want dolphins near Hurghada instead, that is bottlenose at Shaab El Erg, a different animal and a different trip.

Delfini rotitori la Samadai
Laguna e protejată și se vede că delfinii sunt liniștiți acolo. Am stat în zona în care e permis snorkelingul și au trecut pe lângă noi de mai multe ori. Zi lungă, dar merită.

Trip-specific questions
What is the 100-guest daily quota and does it affect me?
Since 2004 the inner lagoon at Samadai allows only 100 snorkelers in the water at once, between 10:00 and 12:30. We book your slot a week in advance, you receive a wristband on the boat that grants entry. We never overbook against the quota.
How likely is a spinner dolphin encounter?
Around 95 percent of trips. The pod numbers 60 to 80 spinner dolphins and uses the lagoon as a daytime rest zone. They are usually present from the moment the boats arrive, sleeping in a slow circular pattern that snorkelers float above.
Can I use fins in the protected zone?
No, fins are banned in the inner lagoon to protect the seagrass and reduce noise. You snorkel with a vest and mask only. The captain briefs the rules and the rangers check at the buoy line before you swim.
How is this different from Hurghada Dolphin House?
Different species. Samadai has spinner dolphins, smaller, more acrobatic, often spinning above the surface as the name suggests. Hurghada has bottlenose dolphins, larger and more curious. Both are wild, both follow rest patterns, both are ethical when the rules are followed.
What time does the trip get back?
Late afternoon. Pickup is around 06:30 and the whole day runs about nine hours, so most guests are back at their hotel between 15:00 and 16:30 depending on how far along the coast they are staying. Plan a quiet evening rather than anything you have to be on time for.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You need to be comfortable floating in water too deep to stand in, wearing a buoyancy vest, for stretches of ten to twenty minutes. You do not need to be fast or fit. Fins are not allowed inside the protected zone, so you cannot rely on them, which is worth knowing if you usually depend on fins to feel secure.
What happens if the dolphins are not there?
The trip still runs and the price does not change. It happens on roughly one morning in twenty. The boat spends the time on the outer reef instead, which is genuinely good snorkeling, and lunch and the crossing are unchanged. We do not offer a dolphin guarantee, because the only way to keep one would be to chase the pod.
Can children do this trip?
Older children who swim confidently in deep water, yes. Small children, no. The entry is from a buoy line into open water with no shallow area to stand in and no fins permitted, and the day is nine hours long. For a family wanting wildlife in Marsa Alam, Marsa Mubarak is the better answer: sandy entry, knee-deep water, and turtles on almost every trip.
Is food included and what is on the boat?
Lunch is served on board after the dolphin window, along with drinking water, tea and soft drinks through the day. The boat has shade, a toilet and a freshwater rinse. Bring a towel, reef-safe sunscreen and something warm for the crossing back, because the breeze is cool even in summer.
How far in advance should I book?
About a week. The 100-person daily quota is allocated in advance, so unlike our island trips this one cannot be arranged the evening before. In July and August the slots go earlier still.
