Sataya Dolphin Reef, Marsa Alam

A horseshoe reef south of Marsa Alam, home to one of the largest spinner dolphin pods in Egypt.

About this trip

Sataya is our far-south dolphin trip from Hamata harbour, deep into Fury Shoals. On a good morning the pod can run to 100–200 spinner dolphins, the largest gathering in Egyptian waters. The captain decides the spot inside the reserve based on where the pod is on the day, we do not publish a fixed location. The boat ride is long, around three hours each way, but the encounter is the biggest scale you can do in Egypt. Wild dolphin sightings are never guaranteed.

The trade you are making

Sataya is the largest spinner dolphin gathering in Egyptian waters, and it costs you an entire day to see it. Pickup is between 04:30 and 05:30 depending on how far your hotel is from Hamata, the boat leaves port around 06:30, and the crossing takes about three hours each way. You are back at your hotel near 19:00. What you get for that is a lagoon roughly twice the size of Samadai holding 100 to 200 dolphins on a good morning, with far fewer boats sharing it. The pod is more relaxed and often more curious, because there is simply more space between them and the visitors. If you have never done a dolphin trip, Samadai is the sensible first one: ninety minutes out instead of three hours, and the same species. Sataya is the trip you book when you already know you like this and want it at full scale.

Six hours on a boat, and how to spend them well

The boat has a shaded upper deck with cushions, and most guests sleep on the way out and talk on the way back. Take a light jumper: leaving port before sunrise, the wind over open water is cold even in August, and people underestimate this every single week. There is no fuel stop and no way to shorten the return, so if you are prone to seasickness take something an hour before departure rather than when you start to feel it. The route runs down the coast and out to Fury Shoals, and on calm mornings the water is glass, but a fresh northerly makes the outbound leg genuinely bumpy. Breakfast is served once you are underway and lunch on board after the lagoon. Bring more sunscreen than you think you need, because the deck offers shade but the reflection off the water finds you anyway.

How the encounter works at the lagoon

The aim is to be in position for the dolphin window around 09:30, while the pod is still resting inside the reef ring. The captain chooses the spot on the day based on where the animals actually are; we do not publish a fixed location, because a lagoon this size means the pod is not always in the same corner of it. Entry is quiet and in groups, from the back of the boat, and the guide sets a line across the lagoon rather than into the middle of the pod. You swim sideways and let them pass. Nobody chases, nobody dives down on them, and the crew will end a session early if a group cannot keep to that. After the dolphin windows the boat moves to a nearby Fury Shoals reef for a proper snorkel stop. This part gets overlooked in the trip reports and it should not: these are some of the least visited reefs in Egypt, and they are in better condition than anything within an hour of Hurghada.

Who should not book this

Anyone who gets badly seasick, anyone travelling with small children, and anyone whose holiday cannot absorb a fourteen hour day. It is also the wrong choice if it is your only free day and the forecast is uncertain, because this is the first trip we cancel when the wind turns, and a cancellation on your last day leaves you with nothing. If any of that applies, Samadai gives you the same species on a much shorter day, and Marsa Mubarak gives you a calm bay with turtles and no crossing worth mentioning.

Trip highlights

  • Up to 100+ dolphins on a good day
  • Long journey, big reward
  • Lunch and refreshments

What you will see underwater

Spinner dolphins in numbers you will not see anywhere else in Egypt, often 100 to 200 animals. The surrounding Fury Shoals reefs hold healthy hard coral, reef sharks on the outer walls, turtles and large schooling fish. Every sighting depends on conditions and none is guaranteed.

Identify every fish and coral you'll meet

Best time to go

March to November. The crossing is long and exposed, so the trip is the first to be cancelled when the wind picks up, most often between December and February.

Travel tips

Take a light jumper and something to lie on. Six hours of the day is spent on the boat, most of it before 10:00 when the breeze is cold. Seasickness tablets are worth taking an hour before departure if you are unsure, because there is no turning back once you are underway.

The biggest pod I've seen

Very early start and a long boat ride, but there must have been eighty dolphins around the reef. They stayed with the boat for ages. If you only do one dolphin trip, make it this one.

Огромная стая

Выезд очень ранний и идти до рифа долго, но дельфинов было около восьмидесяти. Они долго держались рядом с лодкой. Из всех дельфиньих туров этот самый сильный.

Hatalmas delfincsapat

Nagyon korai indulás és hosszú hajóút, de a zátonynál legalább nyolcvan delfin úszkált. Sokáig a hajó mellett maradtak. Ha csak egy delfines túrára mész, ez legyen az.

Trip-specific questions

How long is the boat ride and is it worth it?

Three hours each way from Hamata harbour, six hours of boat time total. The reward is the largest spinner dolphin pod in Egypt, 100 to 200 dolphins on a good morning, in a lagoon twice the size of Samadai. Worth it if you have done Samadai and want more, or if dolphins are the whole point of your Marsa Alam trip.

How early do we start?

Hotel pickup is between 04:30 and 05:30 depending on your resort distance from Hamata. We aim to leave port at 06:30 so we are at the lagoon for the 09:30 dolphin window. Long day, late return around 19:00.

Can I sleep on the boat?

Yes, the boat has a shaded upper deck with cushions, you can stretch out for the three-hour ride. Most guests doze on the way out and chat on the way back. Bring a light jumper, the morning breeze is cool even in summer.

How is the encounter different from Samadai?

Bigger pod, more curious dolphins, less crowded with other boats, but a much longer day. Samadai sits at 60 to 80 dolphins, Sataya at 100 to 200. Samadai is a 90-minute boat ride, Sataya is three hours. If you can spare the whole day, Sataya wins on raw scale.

What happens if the trip is cancelled for weather?

You are offered another date or a full refund, your choice. Sataya is the first trip we call off when the wind picks up, because three hours of open water in a northerly is unpleasant and occasionally unsafe. We decide the evening before wherever possible so you can use the day for something else.

Is there a toilet and shade on the boat?

Yes to both. The boat has a toilet, a shaded upper deck with cushions, and a freshwater rinse. Given that you are on board for around six hours in total, these are worth asking about before you book any Sataya trip, including ours.

Can I do Sataya and Samadai on the same holiday?

You can, and a few guests do, but they are the same species in the same behaviour. If you have two spare days, most people get more out of pairing one dolphin trip with Abu Dabbab for dugongs and turtles, which is a completely different animal and a completely different kind of day.

How many other boats are at the lagoon?

Usually a handful, and the lagoon is roughly twice the size of Samadai, so it never feels like the queue that Samadai can become at the height of summer. That space is a large part of why the dolphins here behave more curiously.
