About this trip
Tiran Island sits in the Strait of Tiran between Sinai and Saudi Arabia. The four reefs (Jackson, Woodhouse, Thomas, Gordon) line up like stepping stones across the strait, each forming a current-rich feeding zone. Tiran is the easier alternative to Ras Mohamed when north winds make the southern crossing rough.

Trip-specific questions
How deep is the water under the snorkel zones?
Tiran reefs are wall snorkels. The shelf sits a few metres from the surface, then drops to 30 to 60 metres depending on the reef. You float on top, the wall does the talking. Vests are mandatory, even for confident swimmers.
Are there strong currents at Tiran?
Yes, the Strait of Tiran funnels current between the Sinai and Saudi sides. The captain picks the lee side of each reef on arrival and briefs the entry and exit points. We rope-tow the snorkel zone on current days so no one drifts.
Do we visit all four reefs in one day?
Two of the four, the captain picks the morning's best pair based on wind. Most days that is Jackson plus Gordon, or Woodhouse plus Thomas. Trying to hit all four leaves five minutes in the water at each, you get more swimming a focused two.
Is Tiran safe if I am not a confident swimmer?
Yes, with a vest and the captain's briefing. There is no shallow shore, so you enter and exit at the boat with a vest on. If you do not feel ready for open water, we recommend Ras Mohamed's calmer Yolanda site instead.
