Sataya is the southernmost dolphin lagoon in Egypt's Red Sea, part of the Fury Shoals reef system about two hours by boat from Marsa Alam. The horseshoe-shaped reef forms a protected lagoon where a resident pod of spinner dolphins, sometimes 200 strong, comes in every morning to rest after hunting all night offshore. It is the most reliable place in Egypt to see this many dolphins in one stop.
Why spinner dolphins and not bottlenose
Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) are smaller and more social than bottlenose. They live only in Egypt's southern reefs, with two reliable populations: Sataya and Samadai. Hurghada's Dolphin House at Shaab El Erg hosts bottlenose dolphins instead, a totally different species. If your dream photo is a long line of slim dolphins jumping and spinning in unison, only Sataya and Samadai deliver it.

From $95What a day at Sataya actually looks like
- 06:00, Hotel pickup. The drive to the harbour is around 90 minutes south of Marsa Alam town.
- 07:30, Boat departure. We motor for two hours to reach Fury Shoals.
- 10:00, First arrival at the lagoon. Dolphins are usually already inside the reef ring resting.
- 10:15, Quiet briefing: enter from the back of the boat, swim sideways across the lagoon, no chasing.
- 10:30 to 13:00, Multiple swim windows in the dolphin zone, plus drift snorkels along the outer reef wall.
- 13:00, Lunch on board, anchored in calm water inside the lagoon.
- 14:00, One more snorkel stop on a nearby Fury Shoals reef.
- 18:00, Back at the hotel.
Pod etiquette: why this works
Sataya works because the operators self-regulate. Boats stay outside the lagoon entrance, swimmers enter quietly from the side, no one chases or dives down on the pod. The dolphins know the lagoon is safe so they keep coming back. If they ever felt harassed they would leave for good, like other dolphin sites that got over-tourist-ed and emptied out. Treat the day like a privilege, not a transaction.
Sataya vs Samadai
Both are protected dolphin lagoons in Marsa Alam. Samadai is closer (about an hour by boat), has a stricter access permit system, and the pod is smaller (40 to 80 dolphins typically). Sataya is further but offers a bigger pod and a wilder, less managed feel. If you only have one day, Samadai is the easier pick. If you have time and want the bigger experience, do Sataya.
