Samadai Reef: the regulated way to see spinner dolphins

A protected lagoon an hour off Marsa Alam where strict daily quotas mean fewer swimmers and a calmer pod. Here's how the permit system works.

Samadai (also spelled Sha'ab Samadai) is the Red Sea's most strictly managed dolphin site. Egypt's Marine Park Authority caps the number of boats and swimmers per day so the resident spinner pod, around 40 to 80 individuals, can rest undisturbed. If you want a calm, low-density encounter rather than the bigger Sataya experience, Samadai is the choice.

How the permit system works

Samadai is divided into three zones. Zone A is closed off entirely as a dolphin rest area, no human entry ever. Zone B is the snorkel zone where swimmers enter from boats anchored along the reef line. Zone C is for dive boats further out. Total daily quota is capped, so operators secure permits in advance and trips can sell out a week or two ahead in high season.

What the day looks like

  • 07:00, Hotel pickup, around 30 minutes to the harbour at Marsa Alam.
  • 08:00, Boat departure. Roughly 1 hour 15 to reach Samadai.
  • 09:30, Permit check at the entrance buoy, then anchoring along Zone B.
  • 10:00 to 13:00, Three snorkel windows in the dolphin zone with reef breaks between them. The pod usually approaches the swim corridor on its own.
  • 13:00, Lunch on board.
  • 14:00, One more reef stop on a nearby Marsa Alam site.
  • 16:30, Back at the hotel.

Honest comparison: Samadai vs Sataya vs Dolphin House Hurghada

  • Samadai (Marsa Alam): ~1 hour by boat, spinner dolphins, 40 to 80 pod, regulated permits, smaller crowd.
  • Sataya (Marsa Alam, Fury Shoals): ~2 hours by boat, spinner dolphins, 80 to 200 pod, less crowded but longer day.
  • Shaab El Erg / Dolphin House (Hurghada): ~90 minutes by boat, bottlenose dolphins (different species), smaller pod, easier logistics.
