A protected horseshoe lagoon home to a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins. Three snorkeling stops.
About this trip
Dolphin House is our day trip to meet a wild pod of bottlenose dolphins. The captain knows the lagoons where the pod rests during the day and picks the morning's spot based on wind, water clarity and where the dolphins were last seen, so we do not publish a fixed location. We do not feed them, we do not chase them, we simply slip into the water and wait. When the pod comes past it can be within touching distance. Wild dolphin sightings are never guaranteed.
These are bottlenose, not the spinner dolphins of the south
People book dolphin trips in Egypt without realising there are two very different animals involved, and the difference changes what the day feels like. Hurghada's Dolphin House pod is bottlenose: large, robust, powerfully built, and genuinely curious about people. When a bottlenose decides to approach, it approaches, and it can pass within touching distance because it chose to. They are the dolphins most people picture. The spinner dolphins at Samadai and Sataya, far to the south, are smaller and more acrobatic, and they gather in far larger numbers. They are also resting when you visit, so the encounter is quieter and more distant by design. Neither is better. If you want a big pod, go south. If you want a chance of a close, curious encounter with a large dolphin, and you are based in Hurghada, this is the trip.
How the pod uses the lagoon, and what that means for timing
The pod uses the sheltered lagoon water to rest during the day, five to six mornings a week from March to November. The captain picks the morning's spot based on wind, water clarity and where the animals were last seen, which is why we never publish a fixed location. A pod is not a venue. The timing consequence is simple and worth understanding before you book. The dolphins are in the inner lagoon from sunrise, and as the day-boat fleet arrives and engine noise builds through the morning, they tend to move out to the outer reef. Earlier is better, every time. This is why the private speedboat version of this trip exists: it puts you in the water around 09:00 rather than 10:30. On the standard boat you are still very likely to see them, at roughly 85 percent of summer trips, but you are arriving into a busier lagoon.
The rules, and why the captain will enforce them on you
No feeding, no chasing, no touching, no surrounding. You enter at the lagoon edge and wait. If the pod chooses to come past, you swim alongside, never toward them and never diving down on them from above. The captains follow the HEPCA voluntary code and will pull the boat back if guests break protocol, including yours. That can feel strict in the moment when the dolphins are right there and you want to swim at them. It is also the only reason a pod still uses this lagoon after two decades of tourism, when other rest sites along this coast have been abandoned by their animals. One practical note that guests rarely hear until they are in the water: do not dive down. Approaching a dolphin from above, dropping toward it, reads as predatory. Stay flat on the surface and they will come far closer than they otherwise would.

What you will see underwater
Beyond dolphins (sightings not guaranteed): green turtles, eagle rays, occasional whitetip reef shark on the deep edge. The shallow side has crocodile fish, scorpionfish, and an unusual amount of nudibranch. What you see underwater depends on conditions on the day.
Identify every fish and coral you'll meetBest time to go
March to November is dolphin peak. The pod is in the lagoon five to six mornings a week from May to September. December to February is quieter, sightings drop to roughly 50 percent of trips.
Travel tips
Do not touch the dolphins, do not try to swim under them. Captains follow HEPCA's voluntary code of conduct, breaking the rules will end the encounter for the whole boat. Bring a GoPro on a wrist strap, not a stick, the pole upsets the pod.
Bringing kids?
Children from 6 years welcome. Younger kids can stay on the boat with a guardian and watch the pod from the upper deck.

Delfine wirklich gesehen
Trei opriri, toate bune
Ne-am oprit de trei ori și fiecare loc a fost diferit. Delfinii au apărut la a doua oprire și au stat destul cât să îi vedem bine. Personalul a fost atent cu cei care nu știau să înoate.
Felejthetetlen!
Az egész család imádta. Hatalmas csapat vad delfint láttunk. Bárkinek, aki Egyiptomba megy.

Trip-specific questions
How likely are we to actually see dolphins?
The pod uses the lagoon five to six mornings a week from March to November, so sightings happen on roughly 85 percent of summer trips. December to February drops to about 50 percent. We never guarantee a wild encounter, but Dolphin House is the most reliable bottlenose site in Egypt.
Can we swim with the dolphins?
You enter the water at the lagoon edge and wait. If the pod chooses to swim past, you swim alongside, never toward them and never under. The captain briefs the HEPCA rules before you splash in.
Is this trip ethical?
Yes, with the rules. No feeding, no chasing, no touching, no surrounding. The captains follow the HEPCA voluntary code and pull the boat back if guests break protocol. The pod is wild and free to leave at any moment.
What time of day are dolphins most active?
Morning, 09:30 to 11:30. The pod rests in the inner lagoon after a night of offshore hunting. By 13:00 they typically move back out to deeper water, which is why our boats arrive between 09:00 and 10:00.
What are the chances outside summer?
Around 50 percent from December to February, against roughly 85 percent between March and November. Winter also brings more wind days. If dolphins are the whole reason for the trip and you are travelling in January, treat a sighting as a bonus rather than the plan.
Is this the same as the Marsa Alam dolphin trips?
No. Different species and a different kind of encounter. Hurghada has bottlenose, larger and more curious, in smaller numbers. Marsa Alam has spinner dolphins in pods of 60 to 200, resting in protected lagoons with quotas and stricter rules. Both are wild, both are ethical when the rules are followed.
What else is there to see if the dolphins do not appear?
Green turtles, eagle rays, and the occasional whitetip reef shark on the deep edge. The shallow side has crocodile fish, scorpionfish and an unusual amount of nudibranch for anyone who likes looking closely rather than scanning the blue. The reef stops happen whether or not the pod shows.
