Hurghada vs Sharm El Sheikh vs Marsa Alam for Snorkeling

The town you book a hotel in decides most of your snorkeling for you, because these three are hundreds of kilometres apart and almost nothing crosses between them as a day trip. This page compares them on the things that actually differ: reef type, wildlife, transfer time and how busy the water gets.

  • Choosing a resort town before anything is booked
  • Working out what is reachable from where you sleep

Quick answer

Quick answer: Hurghada if you have a short trip or young children, Sharm El Sheikh if the coral itself is the point, and Marsa Alam if you are coming for dugongs, turtles or dolphins and do not mind early starts.

What each town is genuinely best at

Hurghada has the most trips, the shortest transfers and actual islands with sand, which is why it absorbs most first-time visitors. Sharm has the best-protected coral and the most dramatic wall snorkeling, and no sandbar to break it up. Marsa Alam has the animals nobody else has, on the longest days and the earliest starts.

What does not transfer between them

Do not plan on booking a Hurghada hotel and doing Abu Dabbab, or staying in Sharm and seeing a dugong. The drive is too long for a day trip in every direction. The one exception people ask about is Blue Hole Dahab, which does run from Sharm, and it takes about ten hours to do it.

Questions before you book

Can I do all three towns in one holiday?

Only with internal flights and at least ten days, and most people who try it spend the holiday in transit. A better use of two weeks is one town with several different trips, or two towns with a flight between them. Hurghada and Marsa Alam pair most naturally because both sit on the mainland coast.

Are dolphins, turtles, or dugongs guaranteed?

Wildlife sightings are possible in known areas, but nature is never guaranteed.
